About Pig in a Poke!

Pig in a Poke’s first restaurant location opened in Prestonsburg, Kentucky, in September of 2007, but its origins go back much further to the day that Tammy Cramer bought her husband, Brian Cramer, a smoker for Father’s Day. The gift was a hit, and Brian smoked anything he could at every opportunity. He was passionate about smoking meat, and as he continued to experiment, everything he made just kept tasting better and better.

Eventually, Tammy and Brian began serving meals part time every Friday and Saturday out of a hotel room for about a year while still working at their regular full-time jobs. But, as word spread, their delicious smoked meats continued to grow in popularity, so Tammy and Brian finally decided to open a full time restaurant in Prestonsburg.

Pig in a Poke’s Prestonsburg location is a two-story restaurant, featuring a spiral staircase that leads upstairs to a full service bar. Inside the restaurant, visitors are greeted with a relaxing, family-friendly atmosphere where people can gather to enjoy good conversation and great food!

Shortly after opening in Prestonsburg, the Cramers found themselves with a packed house every weekend, so in August of 2011, they opened a second location just 30 minutes away in Pikeville, Kentucky. The Pikeville Pig in a Poke features a huge deck overlooking the river where visitors can relax and enjoy the view. Both the Prestonsburg and the Pikeville locations offer beer on tap and the same great menu of savory smoked meats as well as a great family atmosphere.

At Pig in a Poke, all of our foods are prepared in-house from the freshest and finest ingredients. Our meats are barbecued wet and smoked over real hickory wood, not pellets, for a tender, juicy, flavorful experience with every bite. We shred our own cabbages for coleslaw, bread our own fried pickles, hand batter our own fish, bake the potatoes for our potato salad, and patty up our own burgers from fresh hamburger meat every day. Our baked beans are also made fresh using our own recipe that combines four different types of beans. Our flavorful recipes, fresh ingredients, and dedication to preparing our food completely in-house every day are just one part of what makes Pig in a Poke Kentucky’s number one destinations for real pit smoked BBQ!

“We appreciate the business of our customers, and we’re glad that, with all the other choices out there, you choose to dine with us!”
